The Anne de Beaujeu Museum, in Moulins, Allier, is located in one of the buildings making up the former castle of the Dukes of Bourbon, France's number one Renaissance monument.
It houses collections on the themes of classical archaeology, Egypt, French history (including a model of the castle of the Dukes of Bourbon), medieval Bourbonnais sculptures, and 18th-century decorative pieces from Moulins including magnificent earthenware and paintings from the 19th century.
The museum has one unusual feature that is sure to please inquisitive minds: a 19th-century herbarium, "the Migout herbarium", named after its creator Abel Migout, comprising 24 presses containing around 3,960 plants. Some of the plants were collected in Nohant in the company of George Sand and his son Maurice.
You can combine your visit to the museum with a trip to the Maison Mantin next door, a superb stately house from the 19th century that was bequeathed to the town of Moulins.
