Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques

Located in the Basque Country, Mouguerre nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees on the left bank of the Adour. Surrounded by greenery, the village unfolds into three distinct districts each with its charm and assets. History tells us that the village did not always call itself so and that there were not three quarters, but five. Thus in its first traces dating back to 1249, the commune is a parish bearing the name of Saint-Jean-de-Biudz. It is not until 1566 that the village appears under the name of Muguerro meaning Basque "new frontier" or "border" according to interpretations of historians. Indeed, the small commune clearly marks a border with the Gascon Country both geographically and linguistically. Until the twentieth century, the extraction of rock salt took place in the commune. The other activity of the village revolves around the railway crossing Mouguerre since 1857. It was then that many railwaymen and switches came to settle in the village. The freight center of Bayonne is established on the commune and an important industrial zone with companies like SAGEM is still there today. The authenticity of this charming commune will charm you as well as its character well tempered.

Things to see and do

A rich historical heritage punctuates the city which nevertheless was the scene of bloody confrontation in December 1813 during the battle of Saint-Pierre-d'Irube. The district of Le Bourg brings together no less than three historical architectural curiosities. The cross of Mouguerre marks the entrance of the district. The cross rises in the midst of a verdant moor. Formerly a place of worship for witches, the place is today inhabited by the symbol of the Church. On the way leading you through the neighborhood, you will discover the elegant noble house of Aguerria, now the headquarters of the Town Hall. The building built before the 16th century was the home of the local nobility before becoming an orphanage-school of agriculture under the guidance of the Benedictine monks and then the consul of Mexico. Finally, as you sink to the heart of the village, you will see the building of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church. Classified as historical monuments, the labourdin style church dates from the 16th century and houses remarkable furnishings.

Sport is in the spotlight at Mouguerre. The rugby club welcomes you on the field for many meetings. On the program, plating and test will rhythm the parties fiercely disputed. The Basque pelota is also part of the game. This will be an opportunity for you to get acquainted with this sport typical of the Basque Country or to attend colorful encounters. Less sporty, but equally traditional, Basque courses are offered. You can learn the language of the village while imbibing its traditions. Back in the field, you will have the opportunity to practice tennis on the hard courts proposed by the municipality.

Events and festivities

The traditional Christmas market of Mouguerre is held on the first Sunday of December. During this day, you can stroll among the stalls of many craftsmen who come to exhibit their latest creations. It will be the occasion to take advantage of it to make your last purchases in order to decorate the tree or to spoil your loved ones with original gifts. Father Christmas will make an appearance. The children will be at the party, because it is expected that he will make them ride a carriage in his company of course. A snack will close the day rich in emotion especially for the little ones who will leave with a wonderful memory in mind.
