Castle Montréal is located on the eponymous town, in Ardeche, 20 km southwest of Aubenas.
It was built from the twelfth century on Mount Royal (later Montréal) overlooking the surrounding valleys and protecting silver mines to access the Vivarais region around the future town of Largentière.
Belonging to the fourteenth century the lords of Balazuc that add to the great tower (keep) and the first building Romanesque Gothic home, the castle remains a Catholic stronghold in this land of refuge Protestants during the Wars of Religion.
The site goes to Hautefort Lestrange in the seventeenth century and in 1742 with Merle Lagorce that take away Aubusson tapestries now preserved in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc.
While dismantling operations will be held in the Revolution, the castle has retained the keep of the twelfth century, the main building of the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries and a magnificent Renaissance courtyard (mullioned windows, hanging balconies, large spiral staircase, vaulted rooms).
Protected as historical monuments, the estate was partly restored by its current owner.
