Commune of New Aquitaine located in Dordogne, Montignac takes place in the middle of the valley of Vézère, in the east of the department. Known all over the world to welcome on its territory the famous caves of Lascaux, it is about twenty kilometers from Sarlat-la-Canéda, near Thenon and Auriac-du-Périgord.

Populated since the Palaeolithic, the city of Montignac develops in the Middle Ages with the construction of an important defensive fortress. Long known as a ford to cross the Vézère, it lives today mainly tourism.

In addition to an idyllic natural setting, Montignac is full of architectural monuments of great interest, and manages some of the most important prehistoric sites in the world, such as the Regourdou site and the Balutie deposit.

Things to see and do

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site for prehistoric sites and caves adorned with the Vézère Valley and classified as a Historic Monument, the cave of Lascaux takes place in the commune of Montignac. It is forbidden to visit the site to protect the site. However, it reveals its mysteries at Lascaux 2 and Lascaux 4. Inside a cave reproduction, you can admire all the facsimiles from the site of origin and a International Center of Parietal Art. Exhibitions and conferences are regularly organized.

Also classified as a Historic Monument, the prehistoric site of the Regourdou is an ancient cave whose ceiling has today collapsed. Near the cave of Lascaux, it now hosts a bear park, as well as a museum exhibiting some of the discoveries made on the site. Other prehistoric sites also take place in Montignac, as the prehistoric deposit of La Balutie classified to the Historic Monuments.

Built in the 13th century and partly refurbished in the 20th century, Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church is listed in the Historic Monuments for its bell tower dating from the 14th century. Inside, you can also admire a 17th century painting by Juan Sánchez Cotán, The Death of Saint Bruno, classified as a Historic Monument.

Several castles take place in Montignac, like the one of Coulonges, of the XIVe and XVIe centuries, inscribed in the Historic Monuments or that of Montignac, the former stronghold of the Counts of Périgord. Do not miss the Bouilhac hotel, dating back to the 17th century, listed as a Historic Monument, or the former Saint-Jean Hospital, also listed.

As you walk through the city, you can see a group of old houses listed on the Monuments Historiques and located on the Quai Merilhou, or the 19th century Duchêne house.

The Vézère Valley offers many outdoor activities and offers many hiking trails to explore the local fauna and flora or the architectural heritage of the surrounding area.
