Montdidier

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Somme

Charming town of the Somme, in Hauts-de-France, Montdidier takes place about forty kilometers from Amiens and its famous cathedral. Located in the heart of the Santerre region, forty kilometers from Compiègne, it is not far from Fignières, Faverolles or Courtemanche.

Occupied since the Gallic period, the territory of Montdidier developed from the Middle Ages. The town has a glorious history, seeing the kings of France and other greats of the kingdom succeed each other on its land. Affected by the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century or by the Franco-German war of 1870 and that of 1914-1918, it is now experiencing a more peaceful period conducive to tourism.

Known for being the home of the first public wind farm, it still has an interesting architectural heritage despite its near destruction during the First World War.

Things to see and do

Listed as an historic monument, the Saint-Pierre church was largely restored following the First World War and is still today a very fine example of flamboyant Gothic style.

Built in the 16th century and restored in the 20th century, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is also listed as a Historic Monument. Flamboyant Gothic style, it has inside very beautiful objects classified as a polychrome stone Entombment from the 16th century or a set of six tapestries from mid-17th century Brussels representing the story of Moses and the Hebrews. Not far away, it is also possible to discover the ruins of the Saint-Martin church destroyed during the First World War with a primitive paving of the 16th century.

Rebuilt in 1928 in brick, the town hall of Montdidier is an incredible building in the Flemish neo-regionalist style. Listed as an historic monument, it features concrete facade sculptures, an Art Deco style hall of honor or a wooden jacquemart from the end of the 19th century. Nearby, you can admire the statue of Antoine Augustin Parmentier erected in 1931 and measuring over 2.50 meters high.

While strolling in the city, you can also discover the German military cemetery, the national necropolis, witness of the horrors of the First World War, or take the very pretty promenade of the Priory. Installed on the former site of the monks' garden, it reveals six rows of chestnut trees, as well as an orientation table.
