Saint-James

Built in the 15th century, the Saint-Jacques church has a triforium and a Romanesque portal. Inside, it is possible to admire a Virgin and Child from the fourteenth century listed as an Historical Monument.

The Château de la Paluelle, built in the 15th century as well, was listed as an historic monument along with its park. Today owned by a descendant of the family of The Hague-Saint-Hilaire, it still dominates the valley of Beuvron. Its huge park is home to a world-class jumping every year.

While strolling in the city rewarded with three flowers in the contest of the cities and flowered villages of France, you will also be able to discover a portal of the 13th century at the entrance of the cemetery, or the Polissoir, a megalithic polisher of Saint-Benoît dating from 4,000 years BC and classified as an historic monument.

Do not miss the 19th century St. Benedict's church, or the fossil site of the former Saint-James fortress.

Hikers and cyclists paradise, the town of Saint-James has several marked trails along rivers and lakes such as Beuvron, Sélune, or the Lac de la Roche drinking. The sites are perfect to enjoy sunny days and organize a picnic with friends.

The market is held every Monday morning.

In July, place at Rendez-vous des artistes, a traditional summer festival with exhibitions and concerts.

The internationally renowned Saint-James jumping takes place in September at the Château de la Paluelle, seeing each year compete against the best jumping horses.

The fair Saint-Macé takes place in September, every third weekend with its ecovillage, its carnival and its fireworks.

A Christmas market with entertainment is proposed in December.

• From May 24 to June 6,2024, the Commune Nouvelle de Saint-James and its neighboring communes are offering a unique program to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy. - Concerts, re-enactments of American camps, demonstrations of military vehicles, construction of a Point Bailey, conferences, exhibitions, cinema, a memorial trail and other events will pay tribute, in a festive and intergenerational atmosphere, to those who sacrificed so much for our freedom. - Activities (exhibitions, conferences, military camp…) mainly on the Champs de Foire and at the espace le Conquérant on rue Victor Dupont in Saint-James. - Liberation concert and show ? Place du Calvaire in the town center. - Parade and stopover at the Montjoie Saint-Martin American cemetery, in Saint-Aubin-de-Terregatte, for an exhibition of convoy vehicles ?

• The Ch ? urs en Sélune association brings together 3 vocal ensembles : the mixed CANTADOR Ch ? urs and accord'hom from Ducey, and the choir from Mortain's Ecole des Arts to form a 60-strong Ch ? urs. Jazz en Bulles, an all-female vocal group, will also present a Swing repertoire from the 40s and 45s. - On the program : sacred works, songs that made history, American, English and Canadian national anthems and the great French songs of the Liberation.

• "Celebrating the heritage of freedom". - The term Tattoo, used in the military music register, originally refers to a military drum performance. - Nowadays, it's used to designate international military music festivals. The result is a truly choreographed spectacle, combining military tunes with music of specific national inspiration. - the show : - - Part 1 - Presentation and parade of military bands (60mn) : - The first part includes an opening ceremony introducing the musical formations. Following this, each band will perform a dynamic, high-level demonstration of its country's musical culture. - - Part 2 - Le devoir de mémoire show - from the landing beaches to the liberation of Saint-James (60mn) - June 6,1944, a memorable Tuesday through the eyes of a child… a child discovers the diary of his grandfather who took part in the Normandy landings. A heroic act that changed the course of his history. To perpetuate his courage and sacrifice, share this unique moment by browsing the pages of his logbook. A variety of military music will be integrated into this special show to pay tribute to these exceptional soldiers. The United States chose Montjoie-Saint-Martin to install the American Military Cemetery, thanks to its view of Mont Saint-Michel and its positioning in the German "Counterattack", following the Avranches Breakthrough of July 31st. 1944.
