Charming little town of Lot-et-Garonne, in the New Aquitaine region, Monsempron-Libos takes place about fifty kilometers from Agen and its famous prunes. It is located at the confluence of the Lot and Lémance, between Villeneuve-sur-Lot and Cahors.
A former fortified monastic town, this town in the southwest of France, Monsempron, developed from the Middle Ages around a Benedictine priory dependent on the abbey of Aurillac. Libos was a river port which experienced a major boom in the 19th century thanks to the establishment of a steel factory. The two cities joined in the mid-1950s to form Monsempron-Libos.
Today, the small town welcomes passing visitors wishing to discover all the charms of this sunny and attractive region.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Géraud priory is the architectural jewel of the city. On site, visitors can discover in particular the priory castle erected in the 11th century and rebuilt at the beginning of the 12th century. Currently owned by the municipality, it hosts several contemporary art exhibitions each year. The site also presents the Saint-Géraud church. Also erected in the 12th century, it was at the time one of the few churches in the Agenais to have a crypt. It has undergone many transformations over the centuries, revealing in particular a choir and a fortified room from the 16th century, as well as round piles with circular abacus carved with animals and human figures.
Listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage, the Notre-Dame de Libos church is not lacking in interest either.
Walks are organized on the banks of the Lémance, to discover the old water mills, or on the banks of the Lot. The opportunity to take advantage of sunny days to appreciate the surrounding countryside landscapes.
