Mittersheim - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Moselle

Mittersheim is a commune of Moselle in the Greater East region, 20 km north-west of Sarrebourg and 80 km east of Metz.

The locality of some 600 inhabitants presents the physiognomy of the traditional Lorraine villages with its half-timbered houses. But it is its environment that makes the specificity of Mittersheim: in the heart of an area rich in ponds, the municipal territory is crossed by the Sarre canal (1860) and borders a lake of more than 220 hectares. Reservoir of feeding the canal, the water is now also a tourist asset of first order since the development of a leisure base.

Already inhabited during the Gallo-Roman period, Mittersheim was a stronghold of the Reformation before paying a heavy tribute during the Thirty Years War in the XVIIth century.

The historical patrimony and the protected natural environment of the municipality make it a step and a place of vacation appreciated.

Things to see and do

Several heritage sites are worth a visit or a glance: the Saint-Hubert church, built in 1785, contains an 18th-century pulpit, a Pietà (representation of the Virgin weeping Christ descended from the cross) of the sixteenth and an organ of the eighteenth. Testimony of the vitality of Protestantism in the region, one can also visit the Lutheran church built in 1866.

In the village, where the water (canal and pond) has always had a major role, the old wooden wash house, as well as an old forge, also deserve a detour.

To better understand the history of Mittersheim, the Lorraine Museum of Traditions presents collections of furniture, tools, objects, costumes and photos of yesteryear that allow you to immerse yourself in the daily life of the villagers of yesteryear. Animations based on traditional crafts are regularly offered in season. Open on Sunday afternoons in July and August or by reservation on +33 6 81 51 79 09.
