Gard village, on the Anduze tourist route in Saint-Jean-du-Gard, Mialet takes place about fifty kilometers from Nîmes and its Gallo-Roman arena. It is located just a few kilometers from Ales, and consists of seven hamlets.
Populated since Prehistory, the territory of Mialet has had a history strongly marked by religious persecutions against the Protestants, until 1787. The village suffered in particular from the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1680 and the War Camisards with the deportation of men, women and children in 1703. More peaceful today, this city in the south of France continues to attract visitors passing through its natural charm and its rich architectural heritage and cultural.
Main tourist place of the town, Mas Soubeyran now houses the Desert Museum dedicated to the history of French Protestantism, particularly Cevennes. The building is known for being the birthplace of Pierre Laporte, a Camisard chief, and takes place in a hamlet with houses made of old stones and typical narrow streets. It is the largest and richest museum on Protestantism in the country, unveiling more than 2000 objects on fifteen rooms. We discover in particular objects of traditional life in the Cevennes, costumes, weapons of Camisards, Bibles or handwritten documents. Guided tours are offered, as well as booklets for children.
Trabuc cave is designed for visitors and consists of two spaces: the Cabrespine chasm and the caves where water is omnipresent. Known since antiquity, the site has served as a hiding place for Camisards during persecutions against Protestants. However, we must wait until the first half of the twentieth century for the first tourists to enter. The cave of Trabuc is known worldwide for a geological specificity, the hundred thousand soldiers, a set of several thousand small concretions recalling the terracotta soldiers of Xian, China. Events are regularly offered such as underground safaris, underground choreography or the Cave ignites with visits to candles.
Do not miss the 13th century Saint-André church, rebuilt in the 18th century, the Protestant church with its deportation plaque, or the Aubignac castle, whose origins date back to the middle of the 16th century.
The hamlet of Aigladines houses a charming little museum of life in the Cevennes that allows you to discover forgotten trades or the typical interior of a Cevennes farmhouse.
While strolling in the village and its surroundings, you will also be able to admire the bridge of the Camisards classified with the Historical Monuments or that of the Abarines. Do not miss to visit the different hamlets with their typical architecture: Mialet, Paussanel, Paussan, Luziers, Mas Soubeyran, Baumelle, Puechs, Aubignac, Aigladines, Pegairolles and Brugairolles. Lovers of preserved landscapes will also be seduced by the Gardon and its bathing, in particular Abarines and Planes, with its rolled and polished granite rocks, and the limestone cliff of Corbières.
