The caves of Matata are located at Meschers-sur-Gironde, in Charente-Maritime, about ten kilometers southeast of Royan.
These are natural cavities dug into limestone cliffs overlooking the sea level of about thirty meters, near the mouth of the Gironde estuary.
These cavities were first developed by the Saracens in the eighth century who used them as silos. Later, they were used under the Old Regime by smugglers who hid salt in order to escape the tax of the salt tax.
During the Wars of Religion and after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, Protestant families found refuge and some parts of the caves became real homes.
The cavities that run on several floors are communicated by corridors and stairs sometimes inside, sometimes in the open air.
Close to the Regulus Caves, which have similar characteristics, in the same locality, the Matata caves now house an eco-museum, a hotel and a creperie.
The ecomuseum includes the reconstruction of traditional habitats of the region, the presentation of furniture, clothing and tools of yesteryear, and evokes the daily life of the people who lived there. Fossils and aquariums are also visible. Splendid panoramic views of the estuary and the Médoc vineyard are the highlights of the hustle and bustle.
