The Pichone dolmen, also known as the "Pichoune dolmen", is located in the town of Ménerbes, in Vaucluse, 15 km east of Cavaillon.
This is a semi-buried funerary monument, below the road leading to Lacoste, which dates from the Neolithic period (2000 or 3000 BC). It consists of an elongated stone lying down, serving as a ceiling for the mortuary chamber. Its side walls are in dry stone and the facade is made up of two stones acting as doors.
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1910, this dolmen is one of the only three buildings of this type unearthed in the Vaucluse and one of the rare dolmens mentioned in Provence.
The Ménerbes dolmen was discovered by a farmer in 1850 who first stored potato crops there and then a priest, informed of this discovery, alerted a local archaeological society. Forgotten, it was found in 1909 and the site was excavated.
The Pichonne dolmen can be observed during a walk or hike from this pretty locality of character, in the Luberon, member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
