Marzan is a municipality of Morbihan, Brittany, northwest of La Roche-Bernard, which it is bordering.
The two localities are separated by the village of the villain which flows into the Atlantic a few kilometers downstream.
The territory of 33 km² has preserved a predominantly rural aspect, and its geographical location, path of maritime passage but also terrestrial between Nantes and Vannes conditioned the history of the parish, which developed in the Middle Ages.
Under the old regime, moreover, Marzan did not fall over the Baronnie de la Roche-Bernard but depended on the County of Rochefort and the Vannes bishopric. Already occupied under antiquity by the Romans, Marzan then becomes a parish whose lands are shared between several seigniors.
Its boom is related to the crossing of the villain: it was long assured by bins, before a first bridge is arranged to connect the Roche-Bernard to Marzan at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The village is from the rest located near the bridge, the rest of the municipality remained rural and agricultural (number of mills attests). With some 2300 inhabitants, Marzan has a high quality and natural heritage: what to delight green tourism enthusiasts near the coast and its attractions.
A step at Marzan allows you to discover many architectural heritage sites. On the religious level, thus quote the Church Saint-Pierre whose oldest elements date back to the sixteenth and 17th centuries. As it is tradition in Brittany, according to the hamlets, number of chapels can punctuate walks: dedicated to Saint Vincent-Ferrier to the trémier, built in the 17th and restored in the 20th, sheltering a altarpiece and polychrome wood statues, to Notre-Dame in Miquel, which was the subject of pilgrimages as early as the eighteenth, in Saint-Symphorien in Kertouard (eighteenth)... Ancient crosses are also visible, as in Foran (17th).
With regard to the civil heritage, the seigniorial castle of Marzan, on the edge of the naughty, date of the 16th century. The domain, always private, includes stables, a chapel and even a hunting pavilion.
Note still, the house of Porsac (seventeenth), the ruins of the medieval castle and the grinder of the predicts, and, in the same village, a windmill with flour dating from the 17th (protected under historical monuments), the room Ajoncs (arranged in what was once the girls' school built in 1933), some old houses and a remarkable well closed in the center.
It is obviously necessary to mention the two bridges on the ugly, by definition partly located in the municipality of Marzan. The oldest (but already the third in history during its construction) dates from 1960, built in concrete and steel, and which followed the former route of the national road. The most recent, more away from urban areas, was inaugurated in 1995 for the passage of the expressway. Long 376 m is an arc bridge built in concrete and steel.
