At the heart of Comminges, in the plain of the Garonne, Martres-Tolosane wraps around the walls of tradition and cultivates a secret protected since the eighteenth century, a know-how that has survived the ages, from water, fire and the earth earthenware.
In this small city of Comminges, old country and capital of art pottery in Haute-Garonne, in the genus called "circular villages" or "circulades" strikes a curious alternation of half-timbered houses with walls of stones, brick or stone. The ring road replaces the old ramparts. Inside the city, the streets follow a concentric or sinuous, and small houses tightened show a history of well-defended city.
The eighteenth century remains the great period of martraise earthenware. Area merchants were numerous pottery was most famous. But the revolution and competition, especially English, came curb this prosperity, and never stop. In 1790, there are only two factories in Martres. This is one of the main features of the history of martraise earthenware.
