Oppidum of Verduron

Monument in Marseille

The oppidum Verduron is an archaeological site located Marseille on Hill Verduron, at a promontory overlooking the sea and the road that once led to the Estaque and the plain of Marignane.

Unearthed in 1905, the oppidum was founded in the late third century BC and abandoned a few years later, after being violently destroyed by an army with catapults. According to historians, the Roman and Greek troops would not have accepted that stood too close to the ancient Marseille of Celtic-Ligurian people (Celts living in the Mediterranean region).

The oppidum comprising a gap and a wall protecting some 36 small houses stepped terraces, the assembly being established on a small area (1200 m²).

Protected as historical monuments, the site will soon be a development also intended to prevent the disappearance of stones and other objects that were buried over time after the destruction of the village.
