Located in the Dordogne, this village of about 600 inhabitants is located in the district of Sarlat-la-Caneda, in the heart of the Dordogne.

One called Marcais, Occitan, takes place on a territory inhabited for millennia. Not far has been discovered including the famous Venus of Laussel, engraving dating from the Gravettian.

Pleasant and rich historical heritage, the village of Marquay is popular with visitors who can admire sites dating from very different eras. Half way between Sarlat and Les Eyzies, the town is ideally situated to discover the wonders of the Dordogne, both natural and architectural.

Gastronomy is also the appointment of Marquay with the discovery of the local cuisine based include duck confit and foie gras. Hard to resist the charms of this ancient and rich village.

Things to see and do

Rich in ancient remains, the village has Marquay monuments full of interest for lovers of history and traditions of the southwest.

Listed building, the Saint-Pierre-es-Links was built in the twelfth century. Fortified, it features original architecture and demonstrates an interesting defensive aspect.

Witness of human occupation in prehistoric times, the shelter of Cap Blanc is surely the attraction of Marquay most popular and most visited. Always accessible to the public, it presents monumental sculptures dating from the Upper Paleolithic. in particular you can admire a beautiful frieze of animals carved on the wall. The site was classified as an historic monument in 1910 and a World Heritage of UNESCO in the late 1970s Adjoining a museum to discover the lifestyle of the Cro-Magnon behind this unique site.

Castle Puymartin has meanwhile been listed historical monument. Built and modified between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, it presents particular a beautiful paneled room painted and dating from the seventeenth century listed building. The nearby castle of Laussel dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth century, not missing more charm and offers an impressive view over the Castle Commarque.

In July and August, the town hosts a country farmer's market on Sunday morning.

In July, up to Marquay coast of the race. This car event brings together dozens of cars of all kinds for a race and a convivial meal.

In early August, the town celebrates its festival over three days with meals, activities and entertainment.
