Located near Saverne, in the Bas-Rhin, the abbey of Marmoutier has one of the most beautiful Romanesque abbey churches in all of Alsace. Listed as a Historic Monument, this former Benedictine abbey from the 6th century was founded by Irish monks led by Saint Leobard.
Destroyed in the 9th century, then rebuilt, the abbey of Marmoutier reveals a facade dating from this period, as well as from the 11th century. Prosperous until the 12th century, it declined over the centuries, notably because of the German Peasants' War in the 16th century and the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. It saw its buildings dedicated to monastic life destroyed during the Revolution, retaining only its incredible abbey church and its Roman-Byzantine style facade with an open porch with three arcades and two square towers.
Inside, visitors can discover 14th century ogival style decoration, with an 18th century choir. You can also admire the very beautiful sculpted oak paneling from the 18th century, or the tombs of the Géroldseck family in the late Renaissance style.
