A Benedictine abbey founded in the 9th century, Saint-Pierre de Marcilhac-sur-Célé abbey, in the Lot, is considered a major monument in the department. In very poor condition, the building is the subject of restoration campaigns.
The Saint-Pierre abbey experienced its golden age from the 12th century. Very powerful, it had at that time more than a hundred priories. Partly ruined during the Hundred Years War, it was rebuilt in the 15th century before being burned down again by the Protestants during the Wars of Religion. Visitors can now discover the ruins of the cloister classified as Historic Monuments, as well as the southern gate of the enclosure listed as Historic Monuments.
Guided tours are now organized to discover the history of Saint-Pierre de Marcilhac-sur-Célé abbey.
