Machecoul-Saint-Même is a town in Loire-Atlantique born from the merger of Machecoul and Saint-Même-le-Tenu in early 2016. Located in the district of Nantes, the city sits near Bois-Céné.

Roman city and Merovingian Machecoul takes place on the territory of the Abbey of Thatch founded in the eleventh century. Strongly marked by the Vendée wars during the revolution, the city is now an important economic center of the region and a popular attraction for visitors.

Quiet and pleasant, the common Machecoul-Saint-Même is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the lush landscapes. The proximity to Nantes, largest city in the region, also makes it a popular location for exploring the rest of this part of the Loire-Atlantique.

Things to see and do

Machecoul-Saint-Même no shortage of tourist interest with its landscapes and its architectural heritage.

Built in the eighteenth century, the audience is now used for weddings, meetings and other events. Former Republican court during the Revolution, it has a beautiful pediment with the arms of justice.

Built in the late nineteenth century, the Romanesque church of Machecoul-Saint-Même replaced a Romanesque church of the thirteenth century. It has the peculiarity of having two steeples.

The ruins of the castle of Gilles de Rais are still visible in the town. The building dates back to the origin of the twelfth or thirteenth century. Gothic style of the castle is now a private property with a sound and light show on the life of Gilles de Rais. Tours are offered throughout the year.

Abbey The Thatch, founded in the eleventh century, there are only a few walls and a dovecote seventeenth century.

Walking through the city, tourists are discovering a lime kiln, or the halls of the late nineteenth century. These can be visited on request at City Hall.

Partly occupied by the retirement home of the city, the monastery Calvairiennes still features seventeenth-century buildings. It shows in particular the Calvary Chapel or two oratories eighteenth century.

Private property, Priory Quinquenevent is a beautiful Romanesque chapel of the twelfth century today in the heart of a farm.
