A former medieval fortress built in the 11th century in Lyon, in the Rhône, Pierre Scize's castle was completely demolished in 1793, seeing its location subsequently used as a quarry.
Originally built by the archbishop and count of Lyon, Burchard III, the castle of Pierre Scize has undergone many extensions over the centuries, being notably embellished with a fortified belt in the first part of the 14th century with the construction of the ramparts of the Colline de Fourvière.
Having become a prison in the 15th century, it welcomed conspiratorial royalists, ecclesiastics, political prisoners or common law prisoners, such as Ludovic Sforza, Jean d'Armagnac, Charles-Emmanuel de Savoie, Duke of Nemours or Henri de Cinq Mars.
