Loos

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Nord

Limitrophe of the city of Lille, Loos, or Loos-lès-Lille, is a commune of the Hauts-de-France. Located in the department of Nord, it takes place on the border of the Weppes, in Roman Flanders, on the banks of the Deûle.

Known in the mid-12th century with the construction of its abbey, Loos became a full-fledged community in 1214. It developed its chemical and textile industry at the beginning of the 19th century like the rest of the region and grew gradually. For a long time prosperous, the city suffered little by little from the economic crisis that reached all the north of France. Loos nevertheless benefits today from its proximity to Lille, as well as its important architectural heritage that bears witness to a rich and glorious past.

Things to see and do

Nearly 40 meters high, the belfry of Loos dates from the second half of the 19th century. Built in a typical neo-Flemish style, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Historic Monuments. It is a square tower made of red brick and reveals a beautiful loggia on the first floor, topped by a bow with the arms of the city.

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, Sainte-Anne church was badly damaged during a fire in 2007. A call for its reconstruction was launched by the municipality. Not far away, you can also admire the chapel of the Château de Landas, a 17th century religious building listed as a Historic Monument.

You will also be able to admire the exteriors of the old Saint-Bernard abbey of Loos. Founded in the 12th century and nationalized under the French Revolution, it served, until 2011, as a central detention house.
