The town of Listrac is situated on a central point of the Médoc ; 35 km from Bordeaux, 35 km from the ocean, lakes 25 km, 7 km from the port of Lamarque and Castle Road. This is probably the origin of its name, coming from the Latin " lista " which means border. Located at 43 m above sea level, the highest point of the Medoc, Listrac is that is the dividing line of the waters must choose between the Medoc lakes or the estuary of the Gironde. The passage through the Roman road Listrac " The Levada " then the D1215 will participate in its commercial development, as well as the nearby ports of Lamarque and Cussac and the installation in 1868 of the railway station Médrac Moulis -Listrac.
Listrac lives of course the rhythm of his vineyard. First cultivated for the purpose of worship, the vineyards flourished during the British period and also the 18th and 19th centuries when the castles were built that we know today. Currently the vineyard occupies 560 ha and mainly produces AOC Listrac-Médoc, communal appellation since 1957, but the AOC Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux Rosé and the excellent but rare dry white Bordeaux.
But the town of Listrac is mostly forest. Largely private, the forest covers 4400 ha. The western part is mainly planted with pines from the remediation of the Gironde in the 19th century heath program. Closer to the vineyards there are more oaks and acacias on the richest land abandoned by agriculture over time.
