Cathedral Saint-Étienne

Monument in Limoges

St. Stephen's Cathedral Limoges is located in the historic center of the city, neighboring gardens of the Bishop and the Museum of Fine Arts.

It is considered a masterpiece of the Gothic style.

Its construction began in 1273 but it was not until 1888 that construction really is completed by the attachment of the Romanesque bell tower to the ship!

The cathedral was built in effect to an earlier Romanesque building which remained only the bell tower and the crypt.

The choir was completed in 1327, and the Romanesque bell tower was reinforced, and then completed the transept. The Hundred Years War delayed the work, which resumed with the first span of the new nave in the late fifteenth century.

The remarkable portal dedicated to St. John, typical of the flamboyant Gothic Limousin allows you to include the Saint-Martial chapel in the cathedral, and it is finished in 1541.

A fire then leave the Revolution in the state the site and not until the second half of the nineteenth century with the construction of the three bays of the nave and narthex connecting the church bell tower for the building to be considered finally completed.

The cathedral, listed in 1862, houses the major works of the Renaissance rood screen (grandstand carved separating the choir from the nave) and the tomb of Bishop Jean de Langeac on which are carved scenes of the Apocalypse. Frescoes in the Romanesque crypt (which is accessible only very occasionally), medieval paintings in some chapels and part of the arches and the organs are also remarkable, the windows of the nineteenth century have incorporated some elements of the first windows (XIV).

A baptistery was also unearthed at the foot of the building during work in 2005.
