Castle of Commarque

Monument in Les Eyzies

Monument located in Dordogne, between Sarlat-la-Canéda and Les Eyzies, the castle of Commarque takes place on the town of Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil. Built on a rocky outcrop in the Beune Valley, it faces Laussel castle on the other side of Beune.

Listed as an historic monument, Commarque Castle has been nicknamed the Fortress forgotten because of its difficult access. We reach the medieval castrum by a gravel road, then by a path of several hundred meters in the woods.

Founded in the twelfth century at the request of the abbots of Sarlat, the site consisted of a simple wooden tower. Partly destroyed in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion, the castle of Commarque is definitely abandoned in the 18th century, soon falling into ruins.

Since its purchase in the late 1960s, the building is the subject of several consolidation and restoration campaigns. Temporary exhibitions of artists are regularly organized.
