Les Andelys

Its prestigious historical past attracts many French and foreign visitors thanks to Château-Gaillard whose history is closely linked to that of Normandy.

• The Château-Gaillard: symbol of the power of the Plantagenet, built in record time (1196 - 1198) by Richard Lionheart, King of England and Duke of Normandy to protect his duchy of the lusts of Philip Augustus, King of La France. Château-Gaillard falls to the French on March 6, 1204. It served as prison for the daughters-in-law of Philip the Fair (1314). The last seat was that of Henry of Navarre (future Henry IV). His dismantling was ordered by Richelieu. It became a stone quarry used for the Chartreuse de Gaillon and the monasteries of Andelys. There remains impressive remains hanging on the "Roche d'Andely" overlooking the Seine.
• The Grand Andely:

• The Notre-Dame collegiate church: Its construction begins in the 12th century on the foundations of the former abbey of Sainte Clotilde. Notre Dame is a history book of architecture. The sculptures, the paintings, the woodwork, offered in testimony of the faith, enrich the building over the centuries. The stained glass windows of the sixteenth century astonish by their wealth.
• The Nicolas Poussin Museum: This old bourgeois house has become the local history museum of the city. The museum has an original work attributed to Nicolas Poussin, famous painter of the seventeenth century, born in a hamlet of Andelys. It also houses local history objects and a collection of works by Norman painters.
• The fountain Sainte Clotilde: Thanks to the prayers of Saint Clotilde, its water took the flavor of the wine to help the exhausted workers to carry out the construction of the monastery.

• The Little Andely:

• Saint Sauveur Church: Built in the 13th century with a large architectural unit, made in one single jet, it is a real jewel of simplicity.
• The banks of the Seine: Walking along the flower-filled docks, overlooked by Château-Gaillard, is the assurance of a moment of relaxation and an invitation to daydreaming at the water's edge.
• The Hospital Saint Jacques: Hospice rebuilt before the Revolution by the Duke of Penthièvre, it was a stop for pilgrims on the road to Compostela. It is now a peaceful retirement home.

• Les Andelys, city of walks and hiking: You can walk along the promenade des Prés, then cross the parks or discover the quiet rue des Remparts, famous for its two towers and the old half-timbered houses and the clock tower through paths and alleys.

Four hiking routes from different points of the town invite you to taste the rich heritage of the city and its surroundings.

• MuMo X Centre Pompidou, produced in conjunction with the Art Explora Foundation and the French Ministry of Culture, is circulating the exhibition "Êtres Vivants", featuring some twenty works from the collection of the Musée national d ? art moderne ? Center Pompidou collection. Labeled a "Cultural Olympiad" by Paris 2024, the truck embarks on a trans-regional tour of Île-de-France, Hauts-de-France and Normandy to echo the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over the course of four months, it will criss-cross Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne, Val de Marne, Val d ? Oise, Aisne, Nord, Somme and Eure, welcoming some 7,500 visitors. - Training courses, tours, workshops and other highlights are organized around the exhibition and the MuMo X Centre Pompidou loggia. - MuMo X Centre Pompidou is a travelling museum, the result of a partnership between Europe ? S largest institution for modern and contemporary art and the Musée Mobile founded in 2011 by Ingrid Brochard. A true work of art, this mobile museum is the result of a collaboration between architect Isabel Hérault and artist Krijn de Koning. - The MuMo will be in Les Andelys on the Place Nicolas Poussin from April 22 to 27. - Access to the truck is by reservation only, for groups of up to 30 people, during the week (call 06 60 55 25 98 or 02 32 54 96 95) ; and an open house, without reservation, will take place all day Saturday April 27 (9am to 5:15pm). Access to the truck is free. - The "Living Beings" exhibition is a poetic evocation of the cosmos, which, according to its original definition in Greek antiquity, encompasses all natural elements. The sky, the constellations, the planet and the organisms that inhabit it are thought of as a single entity : that of the living. - The 25 works assembled for this edition of MuMo X Centre Pompidou explore all the links between mankind and the planet. Drawn from diverse eras and geographies, they bear witness to the power of the cosmic imagination and the ability of artists to reinvent it and adapt it to the most contemporary issues. They also reveal the permanence of a primal intuition : that of a reconnection between human beings and nature, which has persisted in the creative imagination over the centuries. - This exhibition is intended as a space for reverie, but also for questioning : isn ? T it time to think of other ways of inhabiting the world ?
