Religious building located in the town of Val, in the Var, the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié is now listed as an historic monument. Originally built in the 12th century, this charming rural building reveals an incredible decoration of shells and slags drawing foliage and vases.
Enlarged and modified in the 17th century, it consists of a vaulted choir and a solid nave, with a processional path in front with four oratories inscribed on the Historic Monuments. On the main facade, one can admire two niches with triangular pediment, five niches in alcove with shell decorations, or a bas-relief revealing a Pietà.
Inside, the decor is equally original with a reconstitution of Golgotha, more than 9,000 shells of thirty different species, or two human skulls at the rear corners of the foot of the "mount".
Partially degraded, it should soon be the subject of a restoration campaign.
