Le Temple-sur-Lot is a town in Lot-et-Garonne, in the Aquitaine region Nova, 16 km west of Villeneuve-sur-Lot.
And the name of the locality testify in the territory of nearly 17 square kilometers is located on the left bank of the river, which forms at this level a large body of water from the construction of a dam a few kilometers upstream the twentieth century.
The village is formed around a Commandery of Knights Templar established in the thirteenth century which drew its toll revenue collected from boats sailing on the Lot and on the road which ran along.
Malta became a Hospitaller of the entity after the Hundred Years War which caused havoc in the region, the Commanderie then found a second wind and continues to grow.
It remains today the jewel of the town, became the owner of the site. Renowned for producing prunes, fruit and cheeses, Le Temple-sur-Lot which has just over 1,000 inhabitants is also popular with tourists in high season for its offer of water sports and bucolic countryside. Besides, of course, its rich heritage!
In terms of heritage, the Commandery is revealed in fact a castle around which, over the centuries, developed the locality. If the first building of the twelfth and thirteenth century was square but still built in stone, after the Hundred Years War, this time built in brick, the new building proved extensive and well crafted. A first campaign allowed the construction of a dwelling with a corner tower, which was soon doubled when a second phase, and with a stair tower "out of work". Note the windows moldings or double cavet (hollow molding), doors with rounded amounts and chimneys leaning against the wall. Later (XVI, XVII), an enclosure was built, fortified and dotted with towers. The set thus included the stately home of the Knights and the homes of villagers. Part of the Commanderie now offers sports clubs and all be visited, especially during Heritage Days.
See then in the town, the Church of Our Lady (the redesigned former Templar church and embellished over the centuries, became a parish church), but also other places of worship located on the hamlets: the Church of St. Caprais, appearance modest but which houses relics of the saint, and relics, wilderness or almost, churches Saint-Germain (XIII), which suffered from the wars of Religion, and Saint-Germain.
Other heritage pan which is one of the jewels of the village: the lily nursery founded in 1875 by the botanist Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac. The institution still exists, and it fascinates: it is presenting its hybrid plants of varying colors in 1889 at the Paris Universal Exhibition he seduces a client named... Claude Monet who commanded for its gardens of Giverny. The nursery now covers 2.5 hectares and produces 250 varieties of lilies exported worldwide. The site is labeled Remarkable Garden. His visit proves synonymous with exoticism and it seems to go a masterpiece! Open from 15 April to 15 October except Mondays. Outside this period, groups by appointment. Price: 3.75 and 7.50 with instructional booklet. Information at +33 5 53 01 08 05.
In terms of outdoor sports and recreation, the lake has a beach (called Lagzaille) for swimming and lounging, supervised in season, and many water activities are proposed: rowing, canoeing, sailing, water skiing, river cruises and fishing. Information +33 6 60 11 06 36 for fishing (mandatory card) +33 5 53 41 86 46 for other activities.
