Commune of Sarthe, region Pays de la Loire, Le Grand-Lucé is located about thirty kilometers from the city of Le Mans. With a population of just over 2,000 inhabitants, it is seduced by its small country town and its large greenery.

Feudal mound from the beginning of the eleventh century, the town of Grand-Luce was erected in barony by Francis I in 1539. Destroyed entirely during a fire in the late eighteenth century, the town quickly reborn from the ashes around the castle spared. Today a small town, Le Grand-Lucé still attracts many visitors because of the richness of its architectural and historical heritage.

The proximity of the Sarthe city with Le Mans and its old town makes it an ideal holiday resort in the region.

Things to see and do

Listed as a historic monument, the castle of Lucé was built in the course of the eighteenth century by the architect M. De Bayeux. Transformed into a military hospital during the Second World War, it became a sanatorium before being sold to a wealthy American in the 1950s, Timothy Corrigan, who redecorated it entirely. Built between the main courtyard and the park, the castle consists of a main house with a pavilion surmounted by a pediment. There are also several common, a farmyard, an orangery and stables. All buildings are stone and surmounted by slate roofs.

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the hotel Bléteau also benefits from an inscription to the Historical Monuments for its facades and its roofs. Entirely made of limestone from Lavoux and adorned with terracotta or terracotta from Sarreguemines, the building now serves as a town hall in Grand-Lucé. Inside, it is possible to admire a work by Jules Hervé-Mathé representing washerwomen.

The Sainte-Facile church is not lacking in interest and deserves attention during a visit to the small town. In the communal cemetery, you can discover an English military cemetery, consisting of 28 aviators' graves. Their planes crashed around Grand-Lucé during the Second World War.
