Le Coudray-Macouard

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Maine-et-Loire

Le Coudray-Macouard is a town in Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region, 8 km south-west of Saumur.

Its 13 km² area is bordered to the south by the course of the Thouet which flows into the Loire at Saumur.

If part of the land remains dedicated to viticulture, the locality is now renowned for its heritage which has earned it the label "Small City of Character".

After the establishment of a priory in the 11th century, the Count of Anjou Geoffroy Plantagenêt had a fortress built on the hillock to watch over Montreuil-Bellay, to the south. The castle will be demolished during the Revolution (only the old chapel which has become a parish church remains). However, the historic center of the village, which has retained part of its fortified enclosure walls, is crisscrossed with alleys dotted with a number of charming houses and manors, erected in tufa stone and covered with slate.

The discovery of this village (about 940 inhabitants) and the green setting of the banks of the Thouet like vineyards will delight visitors who appreciate green and cultural tourism. A choice stopover near other major sites of the Loire Valley.

Things to see and do

Away from the departmental road leading to Saumur, the formerly fortified village has retained all its picturesque character and can be discovered on foot, along the sometimes steep alleys with names that always sound medieval (rue du Pas d'Aubigné, rue de Tire-Jaret, rue du Four à Ban, rue de la Seigneurie…).

If the primitive priory dedicated to Saint Aubin was burnt down during the Wars of Religion, the old castle chapel, which became a parish, dates for its oldest parts to the 12th century. Originally dedicated to Notre-Dame, it has been altered several times but has retained a Plantagenêt-type vault at the entrance to the nave and some elements from the same period at the bedside. The building now protected as historical monuments houses an altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin (late 17th, early 18th) in the back of the choir. A cross and a chalice are also inscribed. The church is part of the "Welcoming Churches in Anjou" network. Information on +33 2 41 67 98 10.

Still in the village, many manors protected by tufa enclosure walls, some having been seats of seigneuries in the 15th century and then restored in the 18th century have retained all their prestige. One of them is open to the public: the Seigneurie du Bois (15th and 16th century) where volunteers who have renovated this Renaissance-style complex are offering a permanent exhibition. Workshops, events and concerts are also scheduled. Information on +33 2 41 40 20 60.

Participating in the charm of the village, to see then, the Botanical Garden which has been arranged on the theme of textile and dye plants (allowing to produce dyes) or belonging to the silkworm (vers silk). Three categories of plants are visible: textile plants (flax, hemp, palm...), dye plants (madder, pastel, indigo, gaude) or containing dyes (elderberry, dahlia, marigold) and trees whose leaves feed silkworms (mulberry, castor and garlic). The garden can be visited via a 2 km route which takes part of the alleys of the village. Open all year. Information on +33 2 41 67 98 10 or +33 2 41 67 80 50.

In a different register, the Girouetterie workshop is worth a detour. This is the antenna of a roofing company that makes copies of old weathervanes and creates original models. To see during the visit, a weathervane tree, a veritable theater of shadows and lights that evolves with the wind, documents evoking the history of the weathervane, the stages of manufacture. About a hundred models are on display, and thousands of drawings. Open Tuesday to Saturday from May to September and Monday to Friday from October to April. Free entry. Information on +33 2 41 03 19 46.

For hiking enthusiasts, a circuit has been drawn up in the town (with some incursions into neighboring towns) including heritage sites, wooded areas, plots of vines, banks of the river. Three distances are possible of 12, 19 and 24 km. Possible breaks for tastings. Access also open to mountain bikers. Maps and information on +33 2 41 40 20 60.

Finally, note that Le Coudray-Macouard is included in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park which programs activities, exhibitions and thematic hikes throughout the year. Contact on +33 2 41 53 66 00.
