Le Cannet is an important commune of Alpes-Maritimes in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It takes place only two kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, bordering Cannes and Vallauris. Nicknamed the Madeira of France, it reveals a beautiful panorama on the islands of Lérins offshore.
Occupied since the Roman period, the town of Le Cannet developed from the fifteenth century with the implantation of families coming from Italy at the request of the monks of Lérins. It gained its independence from Cannes and Mougins in 1774, by decree of Louis XVI, which allows its economic development from the following century. However, it is necessary to wait until the beginning of the 20th century for Le Cannet to reveal its present appearance.
Very touristy because of its geographical location and its weather, the city of Cannet is also appreciated for its rich architectural and historical heritage which earned it a great affluence tourist in the summer.
Several religious buildings take place in the town of Le Cannet, like the chapel Notre-Dame-des-Anges. Inscribed in the Historical Monuments, it dates from the middle of the XVIth century and reveals a rectangular nave. Classified as Historical Monuments, the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria also dates from the sixteenth century. First church of the Cannet, it reveals inside its decorated walls, as well as two beautiful baroque altars and a vault decorated with eighteenth century mufflers. The Saint-Bernardin chapel, which became an exhibition site, dates from the 16th century and has been included in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments.
Walking along the streets of Cannet, you can also see the Saint-Sauveur chapel and its belfry, or the Sainte-Philomène church of the early 20th century.
Inaugurated in 2011, the Bonnard Museum pays tribute to the painter Pierre Bonnard who chose Le Cannet as a land of welcome. You can discover an important collection of his paintings on the spot.
Built by the monks of Lérins in the middle of the 15th century, the tower of the Danys bears the name of one of the founding families of the commune. Also called the tower of the Brigands thanks to a mistake of Prosper Mérimée of passage in the country, it was inscribed with the Historic Monuments.
Le Bosquet was purchased by the painter Pierre Bonnard in the mid-1920s. Built in the 19th century, it dominates Cannes with its botanical garden and its façade. Pink plaster.
As you walk through Le Cannet, you will also be able to appreciate the Calvys tower, an old 15th century fortified house, the Wall of Lovers painted by the famous Raymond Peynet, or the Pierre-Bonnard space in an old Anglican church. By taking the direction of Place Bellevue and Rue Saint-Sauveur, you will discover the historic and pedestrian center of Cannet, as well as many artisans of art.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the villas on Auguste-Cavasse and Jean-Jacques Sardou streets are not lacking in architectural interest.
The weekly market is held every Sunday morning. A Provençal Christmas market is also offered in December.
In the month of March, the festival of the olive highlights the fruit that made the celebrity of Provence.
