Le Bouscat

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Gironde

Not far from Bordeaux, Le Bouscat draws its features. Simple place still in the eleventh century, the town enjoys a bucolic environment. The woods and the vine are mingled in a verdant mosaic as far as the eye can see grafting plots cultivated. It was not until the 19th century that the commune left its rural air and began to take on the appearance of a city. The stalls punctuate the streets in order to offer businesses to the agricultural workers and the bourgeois houses flourish here and there. The aristocracy of Bordeaux makes it its stronghold of the weekend, enjoying these few days in the countryside. But soon, Le Bouscat becomes more than a suburb of Bordeaux and ties close to the neighboring city. Today, the tram connects the two cities and Le Bouscat continues its rise.

Things to see and do

It is in a rural setting that the city offers a stroll in the rather remarkable past. Disseminated in the commune, the historical heritage takes you into Le Bouscat of old. Beginning with the church of Sainte-Clotilde dating from 1854. Its bell tower of Romanesque inspiration is worth a glance. It houses the copies of the sculptures of Saint-Seurin and Sainte-Croix. Farther away, the castel castle of Andorte, classified as a Historic Monument, stands in the landscape of the Chêneraie park. Dating from the 18th century, it bears the name of the lord who once occupied the castle. Continuing the walk, you will arrive near the Villa Maria-Luisa, witness of the time when the Bordeaux bourgeoisie came to relax at the Bouscat weekend. Nearby, the Villa Jeanne is registered with the Historic Monuments. On the site of the now-extinct arenas remains the sculpture called Selinger's Bullfighting. Finally, the walk ends at the suburban hospital of Bouscat.

At Au Bouscat, there are no fewer than 15.7 hectares of green spaces waiting for you spread across the city into parks and gardens. The park of the Ermitage is a haven of peace. Country mosaic of different species, the park shelters a rose garden, a labyrinth vegetal, a box to read and also a playground. The Parc de la Chêneraie mentioned above also has a playground, a box to read and a melting pot of holm oaks and of the most remarkable micocouliers. Park Marceau is an ideal place for walks. The garden of Arnstadt, for its part, is the symbol of the twinning with a German city. The communal greenhouses open their doors to the public during festivities related to sustainable development. No less than 45,000 plants are grown in the greenhouse.

Finally, for a moment of relaxation, a plunge into the municipal swimming pool, open during the school holidays, will be welcome.
