Lathus-Saint-Rémy

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Vienne

Small town of Vienne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, Lathus-Saint-Rémy takes place about sixty kilometers from Poitiers and its famous Futuroscope. It is located at the edge of the Haute-Vienne department, not far from Montmorillon, Oradour-Saint-Genest and Verneuil-Moustiers.

A very old parish created between Antiquity and the High Middle Ages, Lathus merged in 1972 with Saint-Rémy-en-Montmorillon in order to found the commune that we now know. Even today, Lathus-Saint-Rémy is an important place of sheep and cattle breeding, its main economy.

Thanks to unspoiled natural landscapes, this city in the west of France is popular with lovers of outdoor recreation, with the possibility of horseback riding or canoeing.

Things to see and do

Romanesque in style, the Saint-Maurice church, which was once fortified, now benefits from a classification as an historic monument. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries and remodeled in the 19th century, it still unveils an original chevet and transept today. Its 13th century nave presents all the elements of Angevin Gothic.

More recent, the church in the hamlet of Saint-Rémy-en-Montmorillon was built in the 19th century on the remains of a first building deemed too unstable. Inside, visitors can discover a 15th-century polychrome wooden statue of Saint Roch, which is the subject of an important pilgrimage.

While strolling in the village, you can also discover the castle of Cluzeau, listed in the Historic Monuments and erected in the place of an old Roman fort. Erected in the 15th century and then remodeled in the 18th century, it consists of a ground floor and a second floor, as well as a chapel.

The only vestige of an ancient 14th century castle, the keep of Lenest also benefits from a historical monument classification. The tower still has fireplaces from the main room, latrines and some traces of painted decoration.

Several elements testify to human occupation on the territory like the dolmen classified as Historical Monuments.

Preserved, the municipality of Lathus-Saint-Rémy presents exceptional landscapes with several sites classified as natural areas of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest such as the Portes d'Enfer, the moors of Sainte-Marie, the pond of La Pottery or the hillside of La Barlottiere. Several marked hiking trails allow you to appreciate all these wonders. Come and explore the 23 km Gartempe loop, the discovery trail of the educational farm, the Aiguail de la Gartempe, Du Roc à Saint-Rô or the Brame trail.
