Lapte

Municipality of Velay, in the Haute-Loire department, Lapte takes place about forty kilometers from the very touristy Puy-en-Velay. It is located not far from Sainte-Sigolène, Montregard and Saint-Maurice-de-Lignon, in the heart of an authentic and charming nature.

According to local legend, the municipality of Lapte was founded on the site of a dolmen whose stones were used to build the first church. The city is however mentioned in the registers only from the eleventh century, and was then located in the center of a seigneury.

Full of charm, the small town in the south of France seduces as much by its architectural as natural heritage. Lovers of outdoor sports and calm life will appreciate its beauty as well as its unique setting.

Church of St. John: listed building, it reveals the highest bell tower of the department: "the Balcony of Velay". Accessible to the summer, the lookout tower offers stunning and unique view of the surroundings. Originally Romanesque chapel of the early twelfth century dependent feudal castle, the building has many changes over the centuries. At the end of the nineteenth century, the lightning strikes the tower, causing a major renovation campaign, and the total reconstruction. Neo-Gothic style, it was built on the verticality with a nave of 37.5 meters long and a tower of more than fifty meters! One can admire a statue of Joan of Arc to the left of the entrance gate, fourteen style end tables nineteenth century among all the windows of the nave, and a large number of statues of St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Bernadette or St. John Francis Regis. As the Pantheon and the Art Museum in Paris or London Science Museum in London, the church now has its Foucault pendulum: the height of the place is perfect for this type of experience and the pendulum enhances the impressive verticality of the place. The Foucault pendulum provides experimental proof of the rotation of the earth. It was in 1851 in the Pantheon in Paris that the physicist has identified the movement of our planet. There is a fifteen clocks installed in France. A Lapte, the pendulum is 17 m high with a weight of 80 kg. The pendulum is fixed and always waves in the same direction, it reverses a keel every 10 minutes when tightened. Demonstrations are open to everyone every first Saturday of each month of the year at 11: free.
St. Joseph Church Verne built originally in the mid nineteenth century it was completely rebuilt between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Its bell tower sits next to the remains of the first building, one can admire two rosettes on the right and left of the transept.
Many castles take place on the town like those of Chazeaux with its square tower with spiral staircase, Pralong with two round towers, Fenoyl which now houses the town hall and the post office or the Rochette was originally a large mansion of the nineteenth century. Several houses of assemblies that were once occupied by the sanctimonious, those women who were visiting the sick or shut eyelids of the deceased, are still visible.

Respirando area Dam Lavalette: one of the most popular places for locals and passing tourists. On site, a lake of more than 220 hectares perfect for swimming, water sports and fishing. You can enjoy a space full of labeled Respirando kind of activities that include the practice of windsurfing, catamaran, optimist, or pedal boat and paddle. Swimming is supervised in July and August, and there is a picnic area equipped with games for children. A mountain bike lets go around the lake.

For outdoor sports enthusiasts, Via Fluvia (greenway) of 20 km return can be practiced walking, cycling or skating from Grazac Station to Station Raucoules.

Three hiking trails are marked 5.7 and 14.4 km: PR 523 - The Balcony of Velay / PR 525 - Our Lady of Montjuvin / PR 669 - Trail Chazotte.
