Labouheyre is a town in the Landes, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, 28 km east of Mimizan.
Its territory of 36 km² is located in the heart of the Landes forest, part of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park. Outside the village, the landscapes reflect this geography, more than 70% made up of environments with shrub or herbaceous vegetation and fully forested areas.
Both crossed by the old RN 10 and the Canteloup stream which has its source there, Labouheyre also has several ponds suitable for fishing and a body of water with a beach for swimming.
Economically oriented towards the exploitation of the forest (establishment of a cardboard unit), the locality remains a stage for pilgrims going to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle.
Near the coast (30 km) and its beaches, the offer of cultural and "nature" leisure activities of Labouheyre (2700 inhabitants) is growing. Advantages to take into account during a stopover or even a stay between green surroundings and seaside resorts...
A discovery of the sites and heritage elements of the small town logically begins with the Place de la Mairie, also known as the Place des Platanes… According to local historians, the click occurred in 1857 during a visit from Napoleon III who liked to stay in the region (we owe him in particular, as well as to the Empress Eugenie, the rise of the large resorts of the Basque coast): the emperor would have been charmed by the place with the vast dimensions but would also have regretted the lack of shade for his horses. A few years later, plane trees were planted, a landscaped arbor, a bandstand installed. The whole has justified that the municipality is awarded the label "remarkable tree". A pleasant place for walkers, the square also hosts outdoor events in a magnificent setting.
In another register, let us quote the Saint-Jacques church whose Renaissance-style portal is decorated with sculptures representing shells symbolizing the pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques and the lilies. Built in Landes stones, the building was initially in Romanesque style before being rebuilt at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century in a predominantly Gothic style. The bell tower was one of the old city gates (the others were destroyed). To see again, a pilgrim's head carved in the porch, confirming the tradition according to which the church is well located on the route of the Via Turonensis, or "way of Tours", one of the four French ways of the pilgrimage of Saint -Jacques de Compostelle.
Another proof, the Saint-Jacques fountain from which a natural spring flows. It was already a place of worship before the establishment of Christianity. The water from the fountain was in fact long considered to have many virtues…
The Moorish-style Villa Mazagran built for the ethnologist Claude Cornut (20th century), and a traditional washhouse from the Gascon region (19th century) are also nearby. to see.
Finally, a heritage overview must obviously include the Landes Photography House, created in 2001 and housed in the birthplace of Félix Arnaudin. Born and died in Labouheyre (1844-1921), he was a great photographer and also a pioneer of French ethnography. He did not have to travel the world: the object of his research was to collect stories and songs in Gascon, to photograph landscapes, habitats, shepherds and peasants from the Landes, saving this heritage and this heritage from oblivion. Félix Arnaudin was thus the first to bear witness to the wealth of the Landes. 3000 of his photographs are kept in Bordeaux, at the Aquitaine museum. Other of his photos are regularly exhibited in this House, which also welcomes professional photographers in residence, and also frequently exhibits photos of local amateur photographers or schoolchildren.
