La Ville-du-Bois

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Essonne

Municipality of Essonne, in the Île-de-France region, La Ville-du-Bois takes place about fifteen kilometers from Evry and about twenty kilometers from Paris and its monuments.

Things to see and do

Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Saint-Fiacre church is built of stone, measuring more than thirty meters long and more than twenty meters wide. Vaulted, the main nave is flanked by two side naves, including the northern one with pointed arches. Inside, visitors can discover very beautiful stained glass windows, the majority of which date from the 18th century, as well as a large number of classified objects, such as a 17th century sculpted work bench from the Célestins monastery in Marcoussis., a high altar in red marble with a wooden reredos with conical pilasters or a paschal candlestick in sculpted oak from the 16th century. Several statues also benefit from an inscription in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments, including those of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Fiacre or Saint Anne.

While strolling through the town, you can also admire the location of the Grande Maison, behind the church, which would have belonged to Ambroise Paré, or even a 19th century Henri II-style castle which today houses the current Sacred Heart High School. The pond and surrounding woods are listed as sensitive natural areas.
