The Château de Tarde is located in the commune of La Roque-Gageac, in the Dordogne, a dozen kilometers southwest of Sarlat-la-Canéda.
It is actually a manor built in the 15th century and composed of a square main building, adorned with a round tower. One notices on the ground floor an arched passage under which passes a path. The main triangular gable façade has mullioned windows. As for the round tower, it is covered in slate.
Residence of the bishops of Sarlat then family home, the manor dominates the heart of the village. In the 17th century, Canon Jean Tarde lived there and was famous for drawing maps of the diocese of Sarlat. Later, the philosopher Gabriel Tarde resided there.
Protected as a historical monument, the manor of Tarde will gladly mark out a walk in La Roque-Gageac, also famous for the exotic garden which adjoins its church. The locality which borders the course of the Dordogne is part of the popular circle of the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
