Built in 1804 by Napoleon I, the town of La Roche-sur-Yon abounds in typical early 19th-century Neoclassical buildings. The Napoleon Trail, signposted with information panels, takes visitors on a tour of sites such as Place Napoleon, a square where an equestrian statue of Napoleon I stands, Saint-Louis church, the town hall (Hôtel de Ville), the former law courts (Palais de Justice), the imperial secondary school, the theatre, the Prefecture and the national stud (Haras National).

A capital in Pays de la Loire ...

The isolated village that was La Roche-sur-Yon originally saw the rebirth 5 Prairial 12th (25 May 1804) due to the decision of Napoleon to create a new town of 15,000 inhabitants. Despite a difficult start, it continues from the July Monarchy to grow and the arrival of the railway in 1866 confirms this growth. Under the 3rd Republic, it reached the 10 000 inhabitants and its population is growing again after the post-war period. In 1964 it merged with the neighboring communes of Bourg-sous-La Roche and St. Andrew Ornay it offers new opportunities for development. In twenty years, from 1954 to 1975, the city increased from 20 000 to 48 000. With approximately 54,000 residents, the city continues today to equip and develop the quality of life and strengthening its attractiveness in the cultural, economic, commercial, academic ...

The constant evolution of its road and rail infrastructure has enabled the isolation of La Roche-sur-Yon and access to a privileged central spot county: 20 minutes from the beach, close to major cities of the West, Nantes, Angers, Rennes, unless 3 hours from Paris. This service quality participates truly give it its status as capital in Pays de la Loire and major projects undertaken to confirm its dynamism.
