Terres-de-Haute-Charente is a town in Charente, in Aquitaine region Nova, about forty kilometers northeast of Angouleme.

It was created on 1 January 2019 following the merger of Roumazières-Loubert, headquarters (2500 inhabitants), Genouillac (612 inhabitants), Mazières (103 inhabitants) The Péruse (523 inhabitants) and Suris (250 inhabitants), and so a total of almost 4,000 inhabitants.

Large 86 square kilometers, the territory of the village belongs to the natural region of the Charente Limousine (also called the Confolais), rural landscape and hilly qu'affleurent the "west" foothills of the Massif Central. Attached to the Province of the Marche and the diocese of Limoges under the old regime, this region formed the department of Charente Angoumois with the Revolution.

The old town Roumazieres-Loubert that through the course of the Charente, was born itself from the merger of several parishes in 1790. It is renowned for its production of terracotta tiles, an industry still alive today who developed in the late nineteenth century when was found wealth clay subsoil.

Heavily wooded, the new town has preserved also an agriculture (cattle) and historical heritage of quality. With its leisure offer and its green environment, assets that justify a step!

Things to see and do

Composed of many entities, as now associated towns and villages were gathered for some from the Revolution Terres-de-Haute-Charente has a built heritage which justifies a circuit in the form of discovery.

It can start by St. John Baptist Church Loubert, dating to its oldest parts of the eleventh century. Note inside a tomb for a young girl from the Middle Ages, decorated with a moving epitaph in Latin. The tomb was unearthed during the reconstruction of the bell tower in 1879. A view then, the Saint-Martial church on Chantrezac, which was built in the twelfth century and was redesigned, with a Gothic-style architecture. Featuring an organ, recently restored, the building which boasts a sound quality regularly hosts concerts.

In the historic center of Roumazières, St. Kitts church is dated from the eleventh century, and its sober architecture is typical of the Limousin Romanesque style, built of red stone. Note that archaeological excavations have established that under the choir of the building are the remains of an aqueduct and a villa (farm) from the Roman period.

Finally, in Suris, the Saint-Genis houses a magnificent carved pulpit of the nineteenth century, which is also the subject of protection.

As for the "civilian" heritage, Castle Peyras overlooking the course of the Charente not mask its medieval origins: a large round tower is attached to the main house which, with common, frames a rectangular courtyard. Still on the subject, the Heritage House, located near the beautiful covered market town of Roumazières-Loubert has a splendid collection of pottery, dating mostly from the nineteenth century. An exhibition to discover the history of the town linked to the omnipresence of the clay and the evolution of technology, craft industry. pottery demonstrations are offered. Opened in July and August from Monday to Sunday except on Friday and Saturday.

In terms then of nature activities and sports, in addition to the booking of tennis courts at +33 6 01 76 19 87, we will like to patronize the leisure Prés du Peyras (also called the Pradelles), which includes a plan water built on the old quarries of clay site.

More unique and combines "sport" and discovering the environment, rail-bike equipped with a combination of an old railway line that once linked Roumazières-Loubert in Confolens. Events and festivities

In mid-May, even years, the festival hosts Artgila specialists sculpting clay. Numerous exhibitions. Potters Market, collectors salon and musical entertainment round out the program.
