La Malène - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Lozère

Small village integrated into the National Park of the Cevennes, La Malène takes place in Lozère, in the Occitania region. It is located about twenty kilometers from Montbrun, in the arrondissement of Florac.

Today, popular with tourists and lovers of nature preserved, the commune of La Malène is also known for its boatmen who allow the discovery of the Tarn and its Straits. After having experienced very dark hours at the time of the French Revolution, this village in the southwest of France has recovered and offer the best of its heritage to its visitors.

Between the banks of the river and the monuments that embellish its streets, La Malène has preserved its culture and traditions.

Things to see and do

Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the manor of La Malène was once the residence of the lords of Montesquiou. After nearly being razed to the orders of Louis XIII, the fortress was transformed into a luxury hotel, which it still is today.

Classified as Historic Monuments, the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in the course of the twelfth century. It reveals in particular an architecture typical of this part of Lozère, all in stone.

Walking through the town, it is possible to discover the ruins of Castel Merlet, the oldest known castle in France.

Since 2013, a trail of marked out heritage allows to appreciate all the most beautiful tourist sites of La Malène.

Several boatmen propose to discover the secrets of the Tarn and its Straits during walks on the water.
