The Notre-Dame-de-Beaumont chapel is located in the commune of La Chapelle-du-Châtelard, in the Ain department, 9 km southeast of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne.
Mentioned from the 14th century, located to the south-east of the current small town, the building has Romanesque origins: fragments of sculptures from the 12th century are also visible on the triumphal arch separating the nave from the choir.
According to sources, the chapel was rebuilt on a hill overlooking the course of the Chalaronne at the beginning of the 15th century, after a fire. Apart from the nave, the whole is vaulted with ribbed ribs.
The chapel is famous for its 15th century wall frescoes, at the level of the apse, which are in the Burgundian-Flemish style. Very well preserved, they evoke scenes from the New Testament, from the Annunciation to the Resurrection.
Furthermore, a Mass Inscription dating from 1433, embedded in the north wall of the apse, has been preserved.
The site has long been a major place of pilgrimage and is now a “must see” during a stay or stopover in the unique Dombes region.
