Municipality of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region, La Chapelle-des-Marais takes place on the edges of the Brière marshes, only about twenty kilometers from Saint-Nazaire. It is located not far from Sainte-Reine-de-Bretagne, Herbignac and Saint-Joachim, in a unique natural setting.
Composed of two distinct parts, the mainland with the town and its small hamlets, and the marsh with the Mayun peninsula and the various islands, the commune of La Chapelle-des-Marais has had an economy that has long been focused on agriculture and the exploitation of the Brière. From the beginning of the 20th century, the face of the city changed, in particular thanks to the industrial activities of Saint-Nazaire located not far away.
The town is still known today for its famous Mayun, a rounded basket used by the salt workers of the region and made of chestnut wood and buckthorn. It is listed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of France.
