La Caillère-Saint-Hilaire

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Vendée

La Caillère-Saint-Hilaire is a commune in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region, 23 km northwest of Fontenay-le-Comte.

Its territory of 15 km² results from the merger, on January 1, 1975, of the localities of La Caillère (to the southeast) and Saint-Hilaire-du-Bois (to the northwest). Since then, although it is made up of two towns and hamlets, the town has nevertheless retained a rural environment. Agricultural land represents 71% of its surface area, and there are also wooded areas and grasslands.

However, in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in Saint-Hilaire, some industrial activities were established (tailoring, furniture manufacturing, agricultural machinery). They have now disappeared. Only agricultural production and craft workshops remain. It should also be noted that the town of La Caillère has remained specialized in the fruit trade (pears and cherries in particular), this production having become the primary asset of certain farms.

The fact remains that it is primarily for its heritage and its bucolic landscapes - notably due to its plots of bocage and woods - that the town, which has some 1,100 inhabitants, is appreciated by visitors...

Things to see and do

In terms of heritage, in the town of La Caillère, the Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste church dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and its original architecture is therefore in the Romanesque style. However, the building was burned by Protestant troops in 1562, during the Wars of Religion. A large-scale restoration was carried out in 1889. Work which also consolidated the very structure of a building which had been abandoned without a roof for several decades before the Revolution. It was then that it was covered again to become a meeting room and then very quickly regained its vocation as a place of worship.

During the Revolution, the feudal castle dating from the 13th century was destroyed. All that remains today is a tower called Rabasteau, named after one of the ancient lords. According to local tradition, Joan of Arc would have stayed at the castle in 1429 while she was heading towards Poitiers. In the 19th century, adjacent to the medieval tower, a mansion, enlarged in 1920, was built...

In the 13th century, moreover, a priory was mentioned on La Caillère, which has now become the so-called Logis site.

In Saint-Hilaire-du-Bois, remains of pagan places of worship and a first Carolingian church were unearthed during excavations in the 19th century. At the turn of the year 1000 followed the construction of a priory chapel which turned into a church in the 13th century (raising the bell towers) and in the 14th century (expanding the nave and the choir via two new bays). Finally, in the 18th century, some time before the Revolution, alterations and restoration work gave the church its current appearance.

As for the civil heritage, in the small town as in the surrounding hamlets, some noble residences have been preserved: La Ray manor (16th and 17th centuries), Salière and Sicaudière castles…

On the cultural side, activities are regularly offered at the library and the municipal village hall, shows and association events are scheduled throughout the year. Information at the town hall on +33 2 51 51 52 28.

However, in terms of leisure, it is the numerous hiking trails and mountain bike circuits traced in the area (crossing bocages, wooded plots and orchards, in particular) which delight visitors and vacationers.

Larger paths are possible to reach, to the south, the gates of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park. To reach the nearest beaches, on the other hand, you should prefer cycling: the ocean is around fifty kilometers away!
