La Bourboule, located on either side of the Dordogne river at an altitude of 850 metres, is both a spa resort known for its curative water and an approved Green Resort (resort paying particular attention to its natural environment) and Station Kid (resort making childrens' facilities and activities a priority). It attracts a large number of spa patients and even more kids! Les Grands Thermes thermal baths, featuring typical belle-époque architecture, specialises in treating respiratory and skin conditions. It also offers well-being and fitness breaks.

Not far from the baths is the charming Parc Fenestre, a beautiful wooded park to wander round and relax in.

The spa resort's very green surroundings are a favourite destination for walking fans who go there for sites like La Vernière and Plat à Barbe waterfalls, and Banne d'Ordanche and Roche Vendeix mountains.

La Bourboule is a village in the Puy-de-Dôme in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, some 50 km south-west of Clermont-Ferrand.

Located on an average mountain, at an altitude of 850 meters, the municipality was officially created in 1875 but its territory is already famous for the richness of its waters enriched by the volcanic geology of its subsoil.

A first thermal establishment was founded in 1814, but it was in the second half of the 19th century that the beneficial properties of water (respiratory and skin treatments) attracted a growing clientele for which hotels were built, Leisure activities. Hitherto renowned high-end, the spa becomes more popular after the Second World War and specializes in welcoming children.

With just under 2 000 inhabitants, it is now a water town but also a tourist resort appreciated for its environment at the foot of the mounts of Auvergne.

Things to see and do

A walk in the city center allows to admire the rich architectural heritage of the spa town, through buildings dating from the period of the station.

It is the case of the present town hall, built in the old casino of the thermal baths, built in 1891 in a style mixing Greek references (statues of goddesses supporting the balcony of the facade) and Italian (towers, Bicolour, cast iron interior staircase).

The oldest part dates back to 1892 and was enlarged in 1928. There is a balcony resting on columns, mosaics decorated with gold; In the slot machine room, rich eighteenth-century decorations while the lobby is more of an Art Deco style.

On the Boulevard Clemenceau, the heart of the city, there are terraces and facades oscillating between Art Deco inspiration, neo-classical and even baroque. At each end, the Hôtel de l'Establishment and the Résidence des Ambassadeurs are also testimonials. Also worth seeing is the former Rozier pastry shop (mosaics, loggia), or the music kiosk in Joffre Square.

The Saint-Joseph church (19th century), built in Romanesque style, built with volcanic materials, and the Grands Thermes, dating from 1872: a dome above the main entrance, and the corners are formed Neo-Byzantine style pavilions and domes.

Although before leaving the heart of the city, a detour through the park Fenestre is welcome. On 12 green and wooded acres, it was designed especially for the children in the 19th century, including a giant toboggan and a small train called the Far West. However, in addition to numerous walks to discover and enjoy the flora and fauna of the mountains of Auvergne, La Bourboule is also a true paradise for sportsmen.

Events and festivities

At the end of February and beginning of March, the Larsenik festival highlights regional music groups.

At the end of May, the Plein la Bobine festival honors cinema intended specifically for young audiences.

At the end of June, the festival Festi-Fanfare brings together the bands, in a friendly atmosphere (with parades in town).

On the second weekend of July, the Sancy Outdoor festival brings together sports enthusiasts.

In July and August, concerts and street theater shows are scheduled very regularly on the Joffre square, in the city center.

In July and August, always, shows of Guignol and Siestes Musicales in the park Fenestre.

The last week of July, international arts festival (painting exhibition and concerts), at the municipal casino.

The first weekend of September, the patronal festival brings together fairground attractions, concerts and entertainment for all audiences.

It should also be noted that from mid-June to mid-September, in the city center, an organic market is organized every Tuesday morning.
