Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Eure-et-Loir

Janville-en-Beauce is a commune of Eure-et-Loir, in the Center-Val de Loire region, 30 km west of Pithiviers. It was created on January 1, 2019 following the merger of Allaines-Mervilliers (309 inhabitants), Janville (1838 inhabitants) and du Puiset (422 inhabitants).

Vast 42 km², the area of the locality is located in the heart of the natural region of Beauce, occupying the west of the Paris basin and renowned for its large areas of cereal crops.

Now counting some 2,600 inhabitants, the new community whose villages were already developed in the Middle Ages, like the seigneurial fortress of Puiset, has preserved a rural and bucolic living environment. Its offer of cultural, sporting and "nature" leisure activities as well as its rich heritage deserve attention.

Things to see and do

The "young" commune of Janville-en-Beauce has a rich heritage which testifies to an active and prosperous past.

In the town of Janville, to the east, the Saint-Étienne church is listed in the Inventory. Its oldest parts date from the 12th century, Romanesque elements that can be seen in the choir and transept. Remodeled in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the church consists of a nave with aisles which ends in a cul-de-four apse. On the south side, the bell tower is formed by a high square tower adorned with carved pinnacles. There are also flying buttresses from the original nave. The portal is recent. The richness of the church is also and above all due to its stained glass windows produced by the Lorin workshops in Chartres at the end of the 19th century. They are classified for the most part (a dozen), and evoke scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin. There is also a singular representation of the stoning of Saint Stephen. In addition, many paintings are housed, signed for example by the painter Lair de Janville (early 19th century).

Still in the village, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity which once served the Hôtel Dieu retains elements from the 13th century and also includes stained glass windows designed in Chartres.

Finally, the former castle of Janville, for its part, has become a retirement home.

Then head north-west to Le Puiset. We discover the Saint-Étienne-et-Sainte-Madeleine church, the oldest bases of which date back to the 13th century. Protected as a historical monument, it consists of a nave separated from the aisles by pillars with capitals. The Romanesque nave and aisles are covered by paneled wooden vaults fitted out in the 17th century. On the facade, the Romanesque portal has been preserved. A glass roof made in 1920 pays homage to the soldiers of the parish who died during the First World War.

However, it is the Puiset castle which remains the major center of interest in the heritage of the village, since it includes the remains of the primitive medieval fortress (including the so-called Boël tower). It was then a strategic point at the convergence of communication routes inherited from Antiquity, notably linking Beauvais to Blois and Paris to Orléans. The whole village of Puiset has developed around this castle and the church, which gives it a certain charm.

Finally, in the former town of Allaines-Mervilliers, itself comprising two poles, there are two notable heritage sites and, moreover, unique. It is first of all the old church of Saint-Fiacre de Mervilliers, now part of a (private) farm. In the courtyard of the farm, vestiges of the 12th century are visible (tympanum and other elements of the old Romanesque portal, in particular). Then, the church of Saint-Martin-et-Saint-Phalier d'Allaines, located in the old cemetery, and the chapel of the presbytery (1777), observable from the street (but within a now private domain) are also to see.

On the cultural side, the media library based in Janville regularly offers events (meetings, exhibitions, readings, etc.) as well as cinema screenings on Saturdays. For more information, call +33 2 37 90 16 35.

And in Le Puiset, the Museum-Space of the Lords has been created: documents and reconstructions relating to the life and daily life of Hugues III du Puiset, who ran the city in beginning of the 12th century. This former lord of Beauce resisted the king of France Louis VI le Gros by fitting out his castle mound. Facts reported at the time by Surger, future abbot of Saint-Denis and royal advisor. The museum is intended to be educational and accessible to all audiences. Open only on Saturdays from April to October as well as during school holidays. Price: 1.50 and 3 euros. Information on +33 6 43 51 53 02.

In summer, the swimming pool of the new town with its open-air pools and its surroundings dedicated to relaxation is a great asset: open to the public on weekends in June and every day. days in July and August. Contact on +33 2 37 90 15 41.

The territory of Janville-en-Beauce, its heritage elements, its cultures dominated by wind farms and the banks of waterways can give rise to pleasant hiking. On the territory, two circuits dedicated to two-wheelers have also been designed and marked: that of the historic Beauce on the one hand, and that of the Val de Conie (named after a tributary of the Loir) on the other.
