Commune of the territorial community of the metropolis of Lyon, in region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Irigny takes place along the banks of the Rhone, about ten kilometers from Lyon. The town is located between Pierre-Bénite and Vernaison, not far from Saint-Genis-Laval or Saint-Fons.
Bordered by several hundred hectares of orchards and offering a magnificent view of the Pilat and Monts du Lyonnais, the municipality of Irigny is an ancient agricultural village which has developed from the twelfth century with the construction of its castle by the Archbishop of Lyon.
Even today, Irigny focuses on highlighting its architectural heritage, highlighting its history and rich economic past. Its proximity to Lyon and its exceptional natural environment make it an unmissable stopover in the region.
Built in the 13th century, the castle of Irigny is an old castle commissioned by the Archbishop of Lyon, Renaud de Forez. Partially destroyed in the 14th century, it preserves from the original building, two towers as well as some elements of the main dwelling. It now houses the municipal library.
Built at the beginning of the 18th century to serve as a residence for the lords of Irigny, the castle of La Combe is now a private property. The building consists of a large square building, and several pavilions. One can still admire the beautiful 19th century corner tower, as well as interesting decorations on the beams, inside. The castle served as the setting for an episode of the series Louis the Brocante in 2010.
Walking through the town, you can also discover the washhouse of the Combe which dates from the late nineteenth century. The manor house of Montcorin, a 17th-century mansion, is also worth a visit with its 2 hectares of French-style gardens and its 19th-century landscaped park. The house of the Dorothee-Petit Foundation reveals a very beautiful post-baroque architecture and an elaborate tower.
Impressive, the plant fresco of the square of the church represents elements and symbolic characters of the commune, like the abbot Pierre who spent part of his youth in Irigny. You can see the landscapes surrounding the town, the castles, the ancient vineyards, the current economic activities, or the twinning of Irigny with the German town of Gochsheim.
Built in the second half of the 19th century, the fort of Champvillard culminates at an altitude of 300 meters. It used to be used for the control of Irigny, Brignais, Millery and part of the Rhone valley. Today surrounded by playgrounds for children, it houses the technical services of the municipality as well as an association of bakers.
Built at the same time, the fort of Montcorin is known to be one of the points of reception of an annual race connecting the two forts of the municipality.
