Hôpital-Camfrout

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Finistère

Common of more than 2,200 inhabitants, Hôpital-Camfrout takes place in Brittany, in the department of Finistere. It is located on the banks of the harbor of Brest, on a peninsula between the estuary of the river Camfrout and the estuary of Aulne. It lies on the route of an old Roman road linking Quimper to Brignogan.

Once a very active fishing port, the commune of Hôpital-Camfrout was a dependency of the Landévennec abbey several centuries ago, before becoming, in the 12th century, a location for the hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. Location of an old clumsy, which would have left its name to the city, it is known in the eighteenth century for its activity, through, among other things, the cultivation of flax and hemp. Today, Hôpital-Camfrout is mainly appreciated for its architectural heritage, as well as for its beautiful beaches overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Things to see and do

Listed as a historic monument for its facade and porch, the church of Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle dates from the late fifteenth century. Formerly a simple chapel of the parish of Hanvec, it has in particular a south porch sacristy and a transept of the seventeenth century. It became a parish church in the first half of the nineteenth century, and today can admire a polychrome stone statue of St. Barbara historical monument, or a set of three polychrome wood statues erected beam of glory of the seventeenth century and also ranked.

As you walk through the town, do not miss either the Sainte-Anne chapel of 1950 facing the island of Tibidy, the calvary of the cemetery of the sixteenth century, the cross of the island of Tibidy of the High Middle Ages or the vestiges of ancient crosses.

Built in the late seventeenth century, the fountain Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle, or fountain of the Virgin, houses a crowned Virgin of the fourteenth century.

The town is home to a memorial to Finishers died for France in Indochina and Korea inaugurated in 2005.

To enjoy the ocean and the sun, head for Tibidy and Kerdréolet beaches. It is possible to practice nautical activities. The Bois du Gars is also nice for hiking with family or friends.
