Bas-Rhin village, at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, Heiligenstein takes place at about thirty kilometers from Strasbourg. Located in Alsace, it is located 250 meters above sea level, between forest and vineyard, near Andlau, Boersch and Zellwiller.

He has always been known for his wine business and especially for his unique grape variety in Alsace, the Klevener. The vine was introduced by the Romans in the third century, gradually becoming the main industry of the place. Heiligenstein now offers a white wine AOC Alsace that has always seduced passing visitors. The village was sadly illustrated in the 16th century with a peasant revolt that ended in blood and violence.

Heiligenstein is now an important place of tourism in Alsace thanks to its ideal geographical location and its interesting architectural heritage.

Things to see and do

Classified as an historic monument, the castle Landsberg is an old castle of the late twelfth century now in ruins. Formerly intended for the defense of the abbeys of Hohenbourg, Niedermunster, Truttenhausen, and Andlau, it takes place at the geological limit of granite Andlau and sandstone Maennelstein.

While strolling on the commune, you will also be able to discover the ruins of the abbey of Truttenhausen, in the old church and the dependency of the XIIe century registered with the Historical Monuments.

Classified as an historic monument, the Pagan Wall is the only vestige of an ancient wall installed on Mont Sainte-Odile. The ensemble was formerly more than eleven kilometers long and between 1.60 and 1.80 meters thick. Completely restored, it has also been the subject of archaeological campaigns.

In Heiligenstein, let yourself be seduced by the Bear Fountain, listed as a Historic Monument, or the Rosenberg Rose Garden with its beautiful plants.

Heiligenstein is also known for its many marked hiking trails with several starting points to enjoy breathtaking views of the Rhine plain. There are no less than six circuits from 1 to 2h15 that allow to appreciate all the most beautiful sights of the town.
