Coëtbo castle is located in the commune of Guer, in the Morbihan department, 14 km north of La Gacilly.
Located a few kilometers south of the town of Guer, a manor is mentioned on the lands of Coëtbo from the 15th century. It has belonged to different families over the centuries (Le Borgne in the 15th century, Avril et Gallery in the 16th century, Troussier at the beginning of the 17th century).
From 1620, a cycle of reconstructions began and in 1647, an architect of the king, Pierre Hureau, was called upon to enhance the existing structure (which had been fortified before being affected by the war of the League, when the Breton nobility contested the legitimacy of Henry IV) while building a new main building in the classical style.
In 1685, with the Marnière family who took possession of the place and would be owners until the Revolution, the towers and remains from the medieval period were destroyed but the interior and exterior fittings and decorations were embellished.
Note that in 1795, the estate was for a time headquarters of the Chouan armies of Brittany.
Nowadays, perfectly maintained, the estate listed in the Inventory therefore includes a rectangular dwelling made of local material (granite, schist) and cut stones (corners, window frames) framed by two imposing square pavilions projecting. The latter have three floors compared to two, one of which is attic, for the dwelling.
Large outbuildings forming a courtyard, a concierge, a chapel and a dovecote complete the built ensemble. With its neat exteriors (gardens and terraces), the whole was sometimes nicknamed the "little Versailles of Brittany".
The property is always private but the exteriors are open to the public in July and August, except Sundays, and exclusively by appointment.
