Grandparigny is a village in the Normandy region of southern Normandy, bordering Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët and 25 km south of Avranches and the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.
The commune was officially created on 1 January 2016 following the merger of Parigny, a village of about 1900 inhabitants, with the villages of Chèvreville (210 inhabitants), Martigny (280 inhabitants) and Milly (350 inhabitants).
Seat of prosperous seigneuries until the Revolution, the municipality maintains a mainly agricultural activity in a typical landscape of bocage favorable to the breeding, market gardening and the arboriculture (production of apples to cider and eau-de-vie of Calvados).
The village of Parigny also has one of the last slaughterhouses in the region and a commercial and artisanal activity.
With an interesting heritage, Grandparigny offers a green preserved environment where wetlands are protected and is a pleasant stage for lovers of rural tourism.
The new municipality has an architectural heritage that deserves to be visited.
This is the case of the church of Saint Martin de Martigny (16th and 17th centuries), in the old choir, whose barrel vault and its recently restored stained-glass window are inscribed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Dating from the 16th century, offered by the lords of Martigny, it is listed as one of the most remarkable stained glass windows of the department. It evokes the Holy Parent of the Virgin Mary.
On the village of Parigny, Notre-Dame church dating from the 14th and 15th centuries has its altar-reliquary of Saint-Berthevin (native deacon of the village who was martyred in Laval in the ninth century).
In terms of civilian heritage, Parigny Castle, in the center of the village, is the most remarkable element of the municipal heritage. Dating from the 15th century for its oldest parts, it is endowed in particular with perfectly preserved pepper-trees (guerites in some sort, decorated with conical roofs, placed in corbelling at the corners of the building). The castle has been listed since 1976. Private property, it can be visited during the Heritage Days in September and in the summer, from mid-June to mid-July. Contact the hotel on +33 2 33 49 41 22.
One can still, at the mercy of a walk, observe manors of the nineteenth century on Honeysuckle, Milly and the place called Coquerel.
Rich in small rivers, the whole of the new territory is also staked with old warehouses (some were used until the twentieth century) and crosses and calvaries.
These elements of "small heritage" are the subject of a thematic hiking trail. Another is devoted to "hollow paths and apple trees". Information on +33 2 33 49 14 15 or +33 2 33 79 38 88.
For lovers of hiking, again, on foot or mountain bike, many routes are possible, starting or including the municipality, to enjoy this typical landscape of hedgerow. This is the case of the Voie Verte which takes again the route of the old railway line which joined Mont-Saint-Michel to the west. Documentation and information on +33 2 33 79 38 88 and +33 2 33 05 98 70.
For the sportsmen, finally, it is possible to Grandparigny to play a game of tennis. Contact us on +33 2 33 59 94 26.
As for fishing enthusiasts, they will benefit from all the information on the developed sites and the regulation on +33 2 33 46 96 50.
In mid-May, patronal festival in Parigny. On the program, fun and musical animations, wine fair and cycling race.
The first weekend of September, butterfly festival of a Day. On the program, rock concerts, song recitals to text or festive.
