Goxwiller

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Bas-Rhin

Charming little village-street Bas-Rhin, Goxwiller takes place in the country of Barr, about thirty kilometers from Strasbourg and its famous cathedral. It is located not far from Gertwiller, Heiligenstein and Zellwiller, on the piedmont vineyard.

Originally Villa veterana on the Roman road to Piedmont, Goxwiller is mentioned for the first time in the tenth century. At the time, it constitutes a property subservient to several abbeys, including that of Niedermunster and will retain this status until the first half of the sixteenth century. Placed under the suzerainty of Strasbourg until the French Revolution, the village was mainly illustrated in history by its important wine-growing activity started in the nineteenth century and the ravages of successive world wars.

Today, Goxwiller continues to seduce visitors with its exceptional landscapes, its architectural heritage of interest and its proximity to some of the most beautiful cities of Alsace.

Things to see and do

While strolling in the village, you will be able to discover with pleasure the old press of the 12th century, as well as several public sandstone wells. Two of them date in particular from the 16th century and have circular or square coping walls with superstructures with external uprights and straight or curved lintels.

Simultaneous church, the church Saint-Jean still presents a tower-choir of XIVe or XVe century. The latter is vaulted with edges and has a walled tabernacle and a Baroque altarpiece representing the Trinity. Often reworked, the nave presents several architectural styles, and one can also admire inside the windows of Ziolkowski at the end of the twentieth century, and a Bible printed by Hans Luft in 1561 and located on the Protestant altar. His Sauer organ dates from the nineteenth century.

Not far, difficult to miss the old presbytery of the seventeenth century which remains today only the barn rubble with a carriage door and two semicircular doors. In the heart of the Old Town, you will also find the former Peter Emilie bakery, a charming half-timbered gable-roofed house from the late 17th century. The latter can be visited in September on the occasion of the European Heritage Days.

60 main street, let yourself be seduced by the charm of the tithed house of Niedermunster Abbey with its yellow facade of the seventeenth century.
