Gabillou

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Dordogne

The town of Gabillou located in the heart of the mesa "white" Jurassic today seems like a small town. It was in fact the center of one of the largest castellanies Perigord. If the 13th century it detects the presence of a priory of the Abbey Tourtoirac in 1496 called "Gabilhono" appears on the large castle Vaudre the center of an area of some 1195 hectares. It is in 1405 that manor by marriage became a possession of the most famous noble family of Périgord: the family of Hautefort. Indeed, Eric Hautefort, a descendant of the illustrious Bertrand de Born, Martha wife of Chassagne, Gabillou lady, and moved to Castle Vaudre becomes the stronghold of the younger branch of the family Hautefort. From this castle, there is almost nothing left, only one can imagine the magnificence of the place to view the traces of the driveway leading to the castle rebuilt in the 18th century.

Things to see and do

The church dates from the late 12th century. It is regrettable that the changes it has suffered have wiped out the few vestiges of its ancient origin attested: yet the two side chapels added in the 14th century remain and together with the rest of the building, the cross. You will find in the south wall of the chapel a coat of arms of Antoine de Hautefort Account.

You can also discover the castle of beautiful stone huts in the heart of this region with truffles and walnuts made wealth.
